Master EQ for deeper connections and healthier partnerships
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage your own emotions while also being able to recognize, understand, and influence the emotions of others. In relationships, high EQ is often more important than IQ for building lasting, healthy connections.
Developed by psychologists Peter Salovey and John Mayer, and popularized by Daniel Goleman, emotional intelligence consists of five key components that work together to create emotional awareness and social competence.
Express feelings clearly and understand your partner's emotional needs
Navigate disagreements with empathy and find solutions together
Build emotional intimacy through vulnerability and understanding
Create safety through emotional consistency and reliability
Support each other's emotional development and goals
Handle relationship challenges with emotional maturity
Check in with your emotions daily - name what you're feeling
Practice the 6-second pause before responding emotionally
Use "I feel" statements instead of "You make me feel"
Ask your partner about their emotional needs regularly
Create a "safe word" for when emotions run high
Celebrate emotional wins together
Practice gratitude - share 3 things daily
Schedule regular emotional check-ins as a couple
